One of the most important groups of patients that you will be caring for are those with a neck of femur fracture. These patients are very vunerable. One in three of these patients will have died within one year. The biggest risk factor for death is a low mental test score.
There are national standards for the care of patients with a neck of femur fracture. The way that the hospital is paid relates to these standards. However, it is important to note that the financial reward is for providing the best quality care by adhering to the standards. This has been proven to improve mortality. Put bluntly, if we don’t adhere to these standards, more of our patients will die. Delays to surgery also result in longer inpatient stays.
